Hookah Air-Supply Cage Dive

Same Gansbaai operator as the conservation dive, this version adds a hookah surface-supplied air line in the cage, so you can breathe normally underwater instead of holding your breath at the surface.

Overview

The hookah system is what sets this Gansbaai trip apart from a standard cage dive. Air is fed down from the surface through a regulator, so time in the cage is spent breathing normally underwater with no diving experience required. The cage itself hangs beneath the surface in open water, in an area the operator, White Shark Diving Company, works specifically for encounters with wild sharks.

The whole outing runs about four hours. It starts at the crew house on Kus Drive in Gansbaai, directly opposite the slipway at Kleinbaai harbour, and ends back at the same point. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, bottled water, coffee and tea are all part of the package, as is the full kit: wetsuit, hood, booties, goggles and the scuba equipment for the hookah line.

It suits most travellers, including wheelchair users, and carries a maximum of 22 people per trip. Hotel pickup is not included, though round trip transport can be arranged as an optional extra at R800 per person. One thing to weigh before booking: sharks are wild animals and sightings cannot be promised. If none appear, there is no refund, but the operator issues a voucher valid for 2 years so the trip can be repeated at no extra cost.
